About the High Level Workshop
Both during and in the eventual aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, key challenges for the ERA were to address its consequences, strengthen societal resilience, improve crisis preparedness, and enable an efficient response. The main objectives of the ERA, set in 2012 and revamped in September 2020, remained crucial to meet these challenges.
At the 2020 edition of the High Level Workshop on ERA, participants explored how research and innovation can contribute to the recovery and help strengthen societal resilience. Participants will discuss ways to improve research culture and the conditions needed for mobility, open science, and collaboration to build the ERA.
The programme included keynotes from Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser, UKRI’s Chief Executive, who addressed the evolution of research culture, and Helena Pereira, President of the Board of Directors of FCT, who addressed ways to enhance research collaboration and multidisciplinary research. The final ministerial session saw the participation of Commissioner Mariya Gabriel, together with interventions of Ministers and senior ministry officials from Portugal, Germany, Slovenia, Estonia, Austria, Bulgaria, Norway and Romania.
The outcomes of the workshop contributed to the implementation of the research and innovation policy priorities of the German Presidency of the EU Council, and informed those of the upcoming Portuguese and Slovenian presidencies.
Welcome by the host
As the COVID-19 crisis prevented the meeting from taking place in Lisbon, FCT President Helena Pereira prepared a short statement to welcome participants to the High Level Workshop.
